LOL BABY!FIC

Oh, Dinosaur Comics.

That trend has diminished in recent years, yes? People don't go around writing baby!fic these days, right? Right?

Girl With A Pearl Earring may be one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen.

And what does it say about me that I found the most touching scenes to be when Griet buys the lapis lazuli, when she slowly mixes the paint; when we finally see Vermeer's work at the end?

[Current Music |The Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)]

List seven songs you are into right now. no matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your summer. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they're listening to.

  1. Carousels - Beirut
I have been listening to their Lon Gisland EP on and off the entire summer. I've already shared my favorite track (the new version of "Scenic World") about sixty times with you people, so this is my next choice. One thing at which Beirut is adept that has impressed me so far is how their closers are just so well-chosen. They fade just enough to put a bookend on the album, but they don't drag or annoy. "Carousels" just leaves you with this comfortable energy to propel you to the next task, which, for me, has been going back to the start of the EP.

  2. Rebellion (Lies) - The Arcade Fire
I love the way the layers in this song build! I always get impatient and start humming each part before it comes in.

  3. Sleeping Sun Coldplay
A B-side from their Dutch release of X&Y. I seem to be this song's only fan on last.fm, which amuses me. It's acoustic and calm and warm and features egg shakers and other gentle percussion elements. Plus, you get the full range of Chris Martin's baritone. Definitely a beach song.

  4. South - Graham Colton Band
Poppy rock to listen to while driving. I love how laid back the song manages to be while never losing its rock energy. Haha, even though I've only seen one episode and read one fic for it, this always reminds me of Due South. Because, yeah, the name (hello), but also because the mood just seems to match. It'd fit comfortably next to Carbon Leaf on a fanmix.

  5. Oh My God - Lily Allen
Purists will hate me for it, but I find Lily's version of this superior to the Chiefs'. I'm a Lily apologist to start, but I find that she breathed life into this song and turned it into something cheekily sophisticated. It has a beat! It has horns! It has funk! Plus her voice is just fabulous for it; smooth and playful. As a bonus, singers everywhere now have an easy model to follow to sing the song. I need her to come out with a new CD soon.

  6. Not About Love - Fiona Apple
Non-stop for about a week. I just found out about her. I KNOW! It sounds so ridiculous, but it's true. Naturally, her mastery of phrases just took me in and seduced me. This is the unofficial leaked version of the song, and I'm not quite sure how that worked exactly, but it's just not the studio version. The studio version seems too sluggish for me in places, and I love what the strings (the CELLO!) do for the song. The aural depth is A+.

  7. Don't Mug Yourself - The Streets
This is on my zombie playlist, and I frequently employ Mike Skinner as a brief refresher course for the Jimmy-voice when it gets out of whack and I can't be bothered to watch the movie. Also, I fucking love this song for Jimmy, which is all thanks to [info]bitterbyrden.

.ZIP @ Mediafire

Honorable Mentions: Anything off of Has Been; "Run the Red Light" by British India, [info]fence_post's fault all the way; Ben Fold's "Protection" as explained here (dl included); Coldplay's "Politik" thanks to this amazing fanvid; Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" because I went through a huge immature rickrolling phase for about a fortnight; "Hoist the Colours" because of Strikeout '07; anything off of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, as I rediscovered that album this summer.

Since when did I want to start vidding? [Aug. 19th, 2007|11:24 pm]
[Current Mood | nostalgic]
[Current Music |Lim's "This is how it works"]

  1. Snatched from [info]pjferret: My LJ in lolcats! Aww.

  2. Because I re-watched Lim's fantastic video for it, just allow me to point you toward [info]synecdochic's "Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left to Lose," which was the very first fanfic to touch me in a visceral, emotional way. 'Fanfic' isn't even the right word for it, because this epically long and beautiful story is a novel in its own right, and a story that you simply cannot rush through. It's set in the SG:A-verse, but you don't need to know the characters to appreciate it (I certainly didn't know them). A lot of praise has been given to [info]synecdochic for it, and it's well-deserved.

But the real hero of the story is Lim, because although my heart ached for "Freedom," it was Lim's video that had tears streaming down my cheeks. By itself, the video is powerful enough, but in the rocking aftermath of the story, it's devastating. Not to mention my own personal feelings associated with the song used "On the Radio" by Regina Spektor. Her vid was actually the first time I heard that song. It never loses its impact. So, if you have an hour or so to dedicate to the story (and, hell, even if you don't), make sure that you get to it at least once in your fannish life.

  3. Another epic I feel is a fannish staple is the Bowiebaharata by MustangSally and RivkaT set mid-Buffyverse. At least once before you die.

  4. I NEED THE HOUSE BLOOPERS WITH SOUND, OMFG.

  5. On GJ, my icon's caption is "Cedric found a Stargate". Hee.

  6. Aeryn and John are so gorgeous together. I need the new Farscape webisodes to please, please, please, please include these two. I mean, wow, I want to see Sparky and Chiana and Pilot(!!) and Moya and all of them again, but. JOHN and AERYN. AND JOHN. This is made no easier by the John/Aeyrn fanvids that are destroying my brain.

  7. Additionally, I still feel the urge to make a House vid to Fiona Apple's "Please, Please, Please". The vidding bug has bit me. I have no idea how to start vidding, but I do understand the time and effort that goes into something like that, and I DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF TIME. Evil vidbug. Ugh.

  8. Life on Mars continues to be awesome. John Simms. You. I don't. ILU.

[Current Music |Moby - Extreme Ways (Bourne's Ultimatum)]

Bernard: "If you live in a council flat"... "beside a river"... "but are not"... "BLIND"? WHAT? WHAT?! "What is your mother's maiden name?" What's her first name? I just knew her as "Ma". Ma! That'll have to do. Ma. ...Possibly deceased.

Bernard: Old wine is good wine.
Manny: Yes. But expensive wine is good wine also.
Bernard: Yes. But the older the wine is, the gooder it is.
Manny: Ah, but by the same token, the more expensive the wine, then the gooder it is also.
Bernard: Look at the colours. All the colours. Well. Yellow.
Manny: This is like... a... a farmyard... of wine.
Bernard: It's like looking into the eye of a duck.
Manny: And sucking all the fluid from its beak.

Fran: Right then, come on. I want to know how you became the little teapot.

Oh, Bernard. And Manny. And Fran! Why are there not more Black Books fans running about?

In other news, the fly of my one pair of jeans will not stay up. I refuse to think about the possible weight implications of this statement (especially since I have LOST WEIGHT, TYVM) and choose to focus on the plain fact that I need new jeans. Nowish.

[Current Mood | insane in the membrane]

RL keeps blowing up in my face on top of all the fannish wankage going around. General consensus: I am in need of a distraction.

Conclusion: The good-old Five Things Meme! It's going around again in other circles, so, why not? You know the drill. Just so I have a list somewhere, my fandoms are: Boston Legal, C&J, Harry Potter, House, Jossverse, lots of old literary classics, lotrips, Roswell, Scrubs, Special Topics in Calamity Physics (what the hell), The Calcium Kid, and Vonnegut's characters. I am minorly-'versed in Discworld, Grey's Anatomy, the -mon animes of old, Veronica Mars, Weeds and... uh. That's certainly not it, so if you think I'd know of it, just mention it.

Aaaaaand... go!

This site is fugly, but I like how much more LJ-ish it is, without the kdjfaksjdfakf that is now part and parcel of an LJ experience.

I don't know. If someone can write up a skin a la Greasemonkey or something to get rid of the fug, I think I could be happy here.

As long as everyone else comes with me.
